ȘI DIALOG | TUDOR GIURGIU IN DIALOGUE WITH ALEX TOCILESCU

forum simbol

duration: 1h

recommended age: 14+

About

Two people are sitting on beanbags under a sunshade. One of them is Alex Tocilescu, who thinks of himself as a playwright. The other one isn’t Alex Tocilescu. They’re drinking beer or water or whatever they feel like. They’re talking about theater, film, culture, 2 Mai, the Black Sea, life, death, or whatever else comes to mind. The audience sits on beanbags and listens with genuine interest. After about an hour, the discussion ends. People leave to go for a swim, or to eat, or to sleep, or to perform in a play. Maybe they’ve left with a thought from the whole discussion, or maybe not. Ideally, though, they would have.

Tudor Giurgiu is the founder and President of the Association for the Promotion of Romanian Film and of its main event, the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) considered by IndieWire to be one of the “50 most important film festivals in the world.” Tudor Giurgiu was one of the 24 global leaders who took part in the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowships program in 2014. He is the initiator of the Gopo Awards and has served as a jury member at several international film festivals, including Ludwigsburg, Crossing Europe Linz, Reykjavik, Prague, Angers, and Amazonas, as well as a member of the international jury of the 2012 Emmy Awards. Tudor Giurgiu was also President and Director-General of Romanian Television (TVR) between 2005 and 2007.

His most recent films are 3 zile în septembrie; Libertate, inspired by real events that took place in Sibiu in December 1989, awarded at the Sarajevo, Miskolc, Arras, and Cottbus film festivals and winner of 10 Gopo Awards; and Nasty, a documentary about the career of iconic tennis player Ilie Năstase, which premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Tudor Giurgiu has produced or co-produced more than 50 award-winning feature films, including Moromeții 2 by Stere Gulea in 2018; Servants by Ivan Ostrochovský, selected for Berlinale 2020; Katalin Varga by Peter Strickland, winner of the Silver Bear at Berlinale 2009 and European Discovery of the Year at the European Film Awards; Ashes and Blood by Fanny Ardant, presented at Cannes 2009; Somewhere in Palilula by Silviu Purcărete; and The History of Love by Radu Mihăileanu in 2016.

Alex Tocilescu has been coming to 2 Mai since 1978, when he was one year old, and he always stays with Aunt Mița, in the middle room. He is also a writer, playwright, and advertising executive.
