Andrei Șerban stages the wedding scene in the spirit of the characters’ fluid identities and sexualities, playing cleverly with the ambiguity of Shakespeare’s ending. But he goes even further, adding a new, radical, and infinitely darker conclusion: Malvolio—the one systematically humiliated and mocked by all the others—takes his revenge and decides to blow the entire world apart. A truly chilling explosion, etched into your retina and echoing in your ears long after you leave the theatre. A directorial resolution that, in fact, reveals the very core of Andrei Șerban’s motivation to stage Twelfth Night—now, in 2024, just months before the ground threatens to disappear beneath our feet. A poetic and political wake-up call.
